Conch Republic
Key West is the final destination of thousands of
tourists each and every year, with the streets bustling
virtually every night. Key West is located straddling
the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Mexico,
its its small 2 by 5 mile size outweighed outrageously
by its popularity. Located 120 miles south west of
the continental mainland, Key West is where the United
states finishes. The majority of people arrive on the
Overseas Highway, crossing 43 bridges and islands which
were constructed through till 1912 on behalf of the East
Coast Railway. Some 26 years after its completion it was
converted to a highway and one that today is one of the
most recognised throughout the world.
Key West is unique in many ways, but it has become famous for its fishing, diving, sailing, its laid back lifestyle and a sterling reputation as a place to party. Together these traits, plus several more, have made Key West one of the hottest destinations in the United States in which to visit and for those that can afford it, a place to own a home or vacation. Key West boasts a plethora of museums, art galleries and quaint boutique shops. A wide selection of good restaurants and plenty of lively bars and nightclubs with live music.
Key West gained a name
for itself originally from fishing, pirating,
later came the salvaging, then fishing again and
nowadays as a tourist destination second to none. Over
28,000 people call Key West home, a further 6-7,000
enjoy their winters in the Conch Republic and tens of
thousands come down to vacation.
If Key West sounds a little hectic for you, there are plenty more keys to discover. They all offer fantastic sunsets, the same warm waters, great weather, the same diving, similar restaurants and tropical real estate through to luxury mansions on the waterfront
Big Pine Key is the largest of the Lower Keys and makes up part of the Key Deer and Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge. Located only 30 miles north of Key West, Big Pine Key has become renowned with visitors who wish to get a glimpse of the Key Deer and the turtles of "The Blue Hole". Alligators and plenty of fish are to be seen especially if you get a chance to explore the back waters.
Ramrod Key is more of a residential key, with less commercial activity which will no doubt suit many of you. There a re a couple of restaurants, bars, two dive shops and a lot of tranquility
Little Torch Key is nestled in between Ramrod Key and Big Pine Island and again is essentially a residential key. Offering basic supplies, a full marina and a restaurant Little Torch Key is far enough away from the lively atmosphere of Key West but not too far to stop you enjoying a night out.
Summerland Key is located just 24 miles from Key West and is very popular with boaters as it boasts wide flow through canals and 4ft drafts. Summerland Key also has its own private airstrip which allows owners of the grand beachfront estates to easily commute back to the mainland.
Cudjoe Key is a little closer to Key West and offers a wide selection of residential homes with most of them lying on the Atlantic side. Some homes are built on ground level but you will still find some lovely stilt homes with your name on them.
Sugarloaf Key boasts remnants of its historic past and is a very pretty key with a pleasant mix of residential, commercial and tourist based properties. Just 17 miles from Key West, Sugarloaf Key is a great location in which to enjoy a new lifestyle or as a tourist to borrow one for a week or so
