St Vincent is a stunningly beautiful Caribbean country that has remained largely unspoilt from the ravages of tourism. Up until recently, there has not been a major international airport on the island and country has been able to remain an exclusive and relatively undiscovered pearl of the Caribbean.
St.
Vincent and the Grenadines, part of the Windward Islands and are located at 13°
15 N, 61° 12 W. Their closest neighbours are Grenada, 120 km (75 miles) to the
south, St. Lucia 40 km (24 miles) to the north and Barbados 160 km (100 miles)
to the east.
St. Vincent is the largest of the more than 30 islands that comprise this island nation, covering roughly 390 sq. km (150 sq. miles). The Grenadines extend 72 km (45 miles) to the southwest. The major islands, north to south, are Young Island, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, Union Island, Palm Island, and Petit St. Vincent.
A new International airport, which is scheduled for completion in 2011, and the English Cricket team playing their
warm up games on the island during the 2007 Caribbean World Cup, have fuelled an
interest in St Vincent and as such the government have spearheaded this
ambitious and remarkable project.
St. Vincent is currently reached by air from North America and Europe through six of the major Caribbean gateways - Barbados, Grenada, Martinique, St. Lucia, Puerto Rico and Trinidad - with local connections to Union Island, Canouan, Mustique, Bequia, or St. Vincent.
The Western coast of St Vincent is no
stranger to having its beauty portrayed on film, the blockbuster 'Pirates of the
Caribbean' films were shot in the next bay along from Buccament Bay. St Vincent will undoubtedly benefit from a greater public awareness
from these major releases.
Due to St Vincent being a volcanic island, it currently has darker volcanic sands but the finest white sand is being imported from Guyana to replace the existing beach.
